Another rant, I fear. (I promise I'm actually quite a chill person!) 😆 I've seen quite a few requests on here for English language teachers/tutors - but stating they must be from UK/US/Ireland (delete as appropriate). This is frustrating. Nationality is no guarantee of a teacher's quality. I hope that any student that wants to work with me is impressed by my skills, experience and expertise NOT my passport! ⬇️

As an Australian who taught English in the UK a long time ago, students never complained about my teaching but they nonetheless wanted reassurance that I was teaching ‘Standard British English’. Some of one class had previously been taught by a Scot and said that being taught by me was a relief.

2/3 ✅ I have 25+ years teaching experience. ✅ I've worked as an IELTS/Cambridge examiner. ✅ I write English tests for major international publishers and exam providers. ✅ I've written English books. ✅ I have an MA in English Language Teaching These are all valid reasons to want to work with me. But any good English teacher could do these things, regardless of where they grew up! In fact, they have advantages I don't. ⬇️

3/3 Now, you can call me hypocritical - I directly target international university students in the UK or who are planning to study at uni in the UK. 🇬🇧 I sell them preparation courses and offer tutoring services to help them succeed in their degree programmes. 🎓 I do this because academic English is my speciality. I know the educational/cultural/language challenges international students face when they come to the UK. You don't need to be a "native speaker" for that, imo. What do you think?

I’m a Japanese living in Japan. Nowadays, online Fipino tutors are popular here. Because it’s cheap. My online tutor is a British. I choose UK. Because when I started learning English (self-study),I I thought English speakers live only in English speaking countries. But now I know it was not correct.

I think is has an advantage being not-native. You know exactly the challenges and caveats you can encounter while you had them too. For a native it’s clear by default.

One of the best teachers I ever had as a kid was not a native speaker (and looking back, didn’t even have great pronunciation or grammar) but had such amazing methods that I looked forward to his classes every day and improved my English proficiency exponentially, especially as a child living in a tiny town in the middle of the Amazon

My city (San Sebastian) used to be really snobbish about native only, but as a language academy director, I have always found C2 level non-natives generally make much better teachers. They know the "pain" firsthand

I teach English in South Korea. First, here the nationality of the English teacher is a visa requirement. Second people can be picky about the accent they want to acquire, or just don’t understand certain accents. 🤷🏼‍♀️

I agree with you. I had many English lessons with “English speakers “. Not certificated tutors were just English speakers. I mean I had just fun conversations not learning. They could not answer my questions with accuracy.
