In Japan, most of the time, any reasons come down to this premise; People are not exposed to non-native speakers speaking Japanese, or in the first place they don’t expect foreigners to speak Japanese so fluently. I’ve experienced myself that my friends and partner who are not Japanese didn’t even get a glance from waiters and they kept talking to me. My understanding is that no matter how theoretically developed the world becomes, people often rely on their instincts and experiences. (2/7)

I agree with you, and am sympathetic to the Japanese person’s feelings. The biggest annoyance is other non-Japanese (who often haven’t spent a lot of time here in Japan) who don’t understand it isn’t as simple as just going out and practicing Japanese.
