It’s wild that we’re currently in the ‘20s and people still mean the 1920s when they say “the ‘20s.” How far past a century do we have to get before we reserve the abbreviated version for the century we’re currently in?

also I read in a early-1930s-published novel a reference to the "eighties" & for damn sure I don't think they were referring to techno, big hair, Terminator or New Wave music in the book lel.
