I am a huge fan of "throw seeds in dirt and see what happens", but JFC this makes it sound easier than it is. In a suburb? Might not want to grow in that construction/old landscape fabric "dirt". Clay? Sand? You need good dirt for most food to grow. And pollinators, awareness of yard flooding etc etc. Root rot is a bitch!
Growing enough food to supply basic produce for a family of three is doable, but don't for a second pretend it's not difficult or you don't need anything but seeds.
