ADHD question for my Thriends. A common trait of ADHD is all the things becoming part of the background noise. For example, I have a giant note on my door reminding me to turn off the heat before I leave for work. It’s been there for 2 weeks, and I have forgotten to turn off the heat 4 days in a row since the note is just part of the door and I don’t ‘see’ it anymore. Or, I have reminders on my phone for all the things, but the habit is to swipe them away and then I forget to do the thing. 👇🏻

Not pretending I've found all the answers for myself yet - but I there are a couple tactics that are at least somewhat helpful for me. You touched on two of them, novelty and making it visual (my version of this is a post it note on the sliding door so I'll see it when I let the dogs out. Only works with novelty though - doesn't work for recurring reminders, only "tomorrow morning, don't forget [X]" ...

Digital calendar is also critical - I have to use Outlook for work, so personal appointments and reminders also get added (with privacy lock turned on). Not perfect, but at least I have a weekday dashboard to review what I'm otherwise forgetting - and post its for early a.m. / weekends. I try to remember to check it first thing in a.m. before work, and schedule time to review / make reminder notes to myself for the next day at the end of the work day - not as good about that 2nd one, but I try.

Not every problem is best addressed with those tools, though. Charles Duhigg's "The Power of Habit" talks about preserving executive function by offloading tasks to autonomic vs working memory. Ie: get the routine is so ingrained, you actually don't have to remember it. So habit 1 was putting everything on the calendar. Habit 2, which I'm working on, is starting and ending every work day with it.. Once mastered that, I can forget things once I've scheduled reminders, because I will see them.

That said, sometimes I just offload executive function/working memory tasks via idiot-proofing. Like, I put my wallet and keys on a retractible lanyard I can attach to myself. If I'm at a place I'll get distracted, like the farmer's market, my phone goes on a lanyard to (and it all gets secured in a belt bag) so I can't absentmindedly set them down somewhere.

I decided, instead of trying to keep myself reminded of eeeevery little thing I want to remember, to have a morning meeting with myself. All I have to do is show up to this meeting first thing. Then I go through my priorities for the day. This only works for my current projects and tasks tho, it doesn’t help for in-moment reminders. For that I try to habit stack. (Eg soon as I walk in the door, keys go in the key box). Reminders & notes don’t work for me long term either.
