When I was a surgery resident I used to overhear phone calls to my attendings from their offices, their families, and the ER. Sometimes it would be over speakerphone; sometimes the circulating nurse would bring the surgeon’s phone over and they would stop what they were doing to talk. As a surgeon now, I don’t take phone calls when I’m operating. No one is a bigger priority than my patient who is on the table and they deserve 100% of my focus and attention. Everyone else can wait.

For instance, treating a ruptured ectopic while a patient in labor is getting close to delivery. If I am called in the OR by L&D, I know it’s important bc they know where I am. If I’m called at work by my husband or our nanny, I know it’s important. The OR RN usually has no problem answering for me. And I wouldn’t answer at a critical point in the case. Sometimes to give multiple people the best care I can, I have to answer the phone.
