Funniest thing I heard a classmate say during firefighter training in prison: “What do you mean we don’t use water to put out the fires? You’re telling me I’m supposed to beat on that thing with a rake!?”

I remember the first forest fire I worked. They outfitted me with a handmade fire rake and an Indian water pack. Nothing quite like trying to remember the brief training you received but didn’t get use a year or so before forgetting it as a fire swirls towards you. The water pack is awkwardly heavy. The turnout pants & boots are heavy. I probably looked like a pregnant penguin trying to dance in the woods. And the fire. It moved so quickly following the fuel & wind. Intense.
