Several years ago, one of my cooks was way out of sorts and when I asked him why, he told me his family was euthanizing his pup. I told him to go home, be with his pup. I’d work his shift and pay him, so he wouldn’t miss the hours. He thanked me, left to see his pup pass. And then he came back to work. I guess I hadn’t been clear in my words.I sent him home again. When we spoke the next day, he said no employer had ever done that for him before. More should. This shouldn’t be the exception.
