For hypertrophy you’re likely better off training in the 4-8 rep range and leave one rep in the tank. The small amount of extra stimulation you get from grinding out one last rep isn’t worth the fatigue it produces. Use failure as a tool every once in awhile to keep yourself honest that you really are only leaving one rep in reserve.

Strength and hypertrophy training are two different forms of training. Hypertrophy can be achieved through either high weight lower rep or low weight to failure. While either approach seems to be great for muscle growth, it's likely suboptimal for strength-specific training. Then it all depends on what kind of strength you're training for.
