Little Red Book was what foreigners called it. In Chinese it was called 毛主席语录 (Chairman Mao’s Book of Quotations). But the irony is not lost on me. The dual propaganda is that the Chinese developers are so disconnected from the outside world that they didn’t realize their app sounds offensive when its name is translated to foreigners, and had to last minute come up with a custom English name (RedNote) so no one would realize their ignorance when it suddenly started entering English discourse.
