When the Western Roman Empire collapsed, there were literally centuries of political turmoil, invasions and general chaos. But Christianity stuck around and began spreading through Europe, sometime by mission, sometimes by sword. Around the year 1000, most of Europe was Christian and united under the Pope's religious leadership. But the continent was still plagued by warfare and lack of ressources.
