When the Western Roman Empire collapsed, there were literally centuries of political turmoil, invasions and general chaos. But Christianity stuck around and began spreading through Europe, sometime by mission, sometimes by sword. Around the year 1000, most of Europe was Christian and united under the Pope's religious leadership. But the continent was still plagued by warfare and lack of ressources. The Pope decided that the common enemy would be the Muslims, and that it was a Christian duty to retake the Holy City of Jerusalem. And off they went, with their heads full of the idea that Muslims were sent from Satan himself. And Muslims were brown and Black people.
