expat is ur company send you to work in a foreign country for a few years with a contract. Normally company paid for housing, school for kids, and private insurance and other allowances for leaving your own country. His position in his original country is guarantee that he can come back. Immigrants is you go to another country to find a job, you are being paid locally with local contract. It is totally different.

When I was 18, I moved to China to study temporarily for a few years, not sponsored by a third party but getting scholarship from the Chinese Government. Since I had expectation of return, I would consider myself neither an immigrant nor expat
