As a Black attorney practicing in New York and Jamaica, the biggest difference is that in Jamaica, I don’t feel like a stranger. I belong in the courtroom. No one questions my skills, asks where my attorney is, or assumes I’m the litigant. I’m not the only Black lawyer in the room, and when I say I’m representing someone, no one looks at me differently. The freedom of not facing those biases feels like a fresh glass of water.
