Maybe this is a hot take but hearing someone say that the world building in Fourth Wing, Iron Flame, and Onyx Storm is on the same level as Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings just about gave me an aneurysm. Are we reading the same books??

I’m so over all of these comparisons. The Empyrean series *obviously* does not have the same level of world building as freaking LOTR, widely considered to be the gold standard for high fantasy. Tolkien spent 60 YEARS writing The Silmarillion for goodness’ sake. It’s apples and oranges. But that also doesn’t mean it’s bad, or poorly written, or that the world building isn’t done well. They are simply different.

It’s not Tolkien. And that’s fine. But what’s driving me batty is the people saying “if you didn’t like OS or were confused by it it’s because you don’t understand high fantasy.” No, that’s not it. I enjoy romantasy, a lot. Some are better than others. But the reason I didn’t love OS (didn’t hate, just didn’t love) isn’t because I can’t understand or appreciate high fantasy.

No no no. That series is brain candy. Tolkien is like a warm meal with complex flavors
