I met someone in a Japanese language meetup and he passed N3 but couldn’t converse in Japanese 🤔 he said he studied really hard but didn’t really practice speaking and listening 🤔

IMO it’s really difficult to improve Japanese speaking skills if you are not in Japan.I studied in a Japanese college using Japanese books, taught by Japanese professors at my homecountry for 3 years.I passed N5 afterwards, but my speaking was a messed.I started using conversational Japanese to the parents of my students that gave me a platform to use the language (but still 😕).I came & teach here in Japan & my speaking skills skyrocketed. IMO ,daily spoken Japanese is way different from JLPT.

Well, Jlpt only test the reading and listening, if u didn't watch japan tv show or podcast u won't know how to speak naturally whether u r in or outside of japan.

There are loads of people like this. I like to say they’re learning “about” the language rather than learning how to use it. He might be able to analyze written sentences and write using constructions he’s learned in textbooks, but that’s so far removed from learning to listen and speak organically as we do naturally as kids.

Not surprising, loads of people passed N1 but can't even speak the language.

The jlpt is a massive scam. I used to cringe when I managed a school in osaka and they thought a N2 was a achievement but couldn't even これはペンです
