DEI promoted merit based hiring by asking people to examine their biases against those different than themselves. The removal of DEI is an effort for the primary qualification and most meritorious to be white and/or male. The push against DEI is mediocre white people who want privledge based on their gender and race, not a more meritorious system where skill and aptitude are valued.
