You really have to go by how people make you feel. You can't go by social norms because even people you shouldn't be around understand them. In fact, they use them to their advantage. They do nice things like give you a Christmas card and exchange pleasantries. They will even do you a favor. They will seem really nice until you eventually see who they really are.
