I’ve been seeing some discourse on returns in indie publishing and some people claiming that trad authors are lucky that they don’t have to deal with this. I need you to know that it’s not technically true! Almost every royalty statement I receive has an amount that I’ve earned but I am not being paid for. That withholding is a “reasonable hold against returns.” I don’t know how the number is determined to be reasonable, but I’ve had as much as $6000 withheld from a royalty check.
