I'd say that's only true of Pocahontas & The Hunchback of Notre Dame. As a whole, the Disney Renaissance is riding off the coattails of The Little Mermaid. Once the dark and serious version of Beauty and the Beast got canned, they purposely reconfigured it after Mermaid's template, & that became the norm for the decade: a lead character who's set apart from the rest of their community, comedic sidekicks, a flamboyant villain, and Broadway-caliber showtunes that cover specific musical categories.
