Color film was commercialized in 1922. It was a Hollywood standard by the 1950s. Photojournalists still used B&W film because of cost of film and prevalence of B&W publications.
Many photos you may have seen in books have been turned B&W. This tricks your brain into thinking it was a long time ago. It wasn’t. This was in my lifetime.
