The Canada-USA free trade agreement was signed by President Reagan and PM Mulroney in 1987. Free trade had been recommended by the MacDonald Royal Commission of 1985. The Liberal oppositiion leader John Turner opposed the agreement saying the result would be a Canadian economy that was heavily integrated with the US economy.
