81 yo MIL is getting a puppy. I’m really trying to convince her to get a senior dog instead. Perhaps sounds selfish but I don’t want to become a full time dog walker. (I already know healthy boundary isn’t a thing.)

Anyone who gives an 81 year old person a puppy should go straight to jail. No passing go. No collecting $200. Jail.

Im a woman in my 30s with two dogs, one under two, and the youngest one is still so much work. I find her exhausting at times. I can’t imagine an 81 year old coping with a PUPPY! While not impossible, there’s so many more factors to consider for someone who’s elderly. I totally agree with you, or else you’ll be getting a puppy.

Does she remember the energy most puppies have and the work they take first year or two?? At 71 yo I didn't want to outlive a puppy (not many families want to keep grandma's dog for various reasons). A middle or senior dog that she can physically care for is totally more appropriate. My recent shelter dog adopted, 2nd time thru shelter @ 5 yrs apart. She is 30# of love and energy. I tried to match a more appropriate age.

I'm 61 and Maggie is my last dog. Health isn't guaranteed and getting another dog is yet another potential burden on my daughter.

I am a healthy and active 73 year old who got a puppy three years ago. I have said many times, what was I thinking? I also have an older dog and that has helped. I walk 3 miles every day and have no problem now but I worry about 10 years down the road and he will be 13 by then. Please tell her to reconsider and think about the fact that if the dog lives to be 15, she will be 96! I worry about being 85 and not being able to walk 3 miles a day.

Oh as someone who had to go through the trauma of emergency flying into town, caring for said puppy, and ultimately returning the puppy when my mom did this a few years back… ouch. Try really hard to talk her out of this.

Just no. I’ve watched my neighbors who are now 83, walk their border collie they adopted as a puppy 7 years ago less and less. He’s had 2 strokes the past 3 years and she’s turned into a recluse. It’s not fair to the dog (I would volunteer to walk their dog, but she hates my older dog; they weren’t interested in working it out with our trainer).
