They're probably related to both the Bruce *and* the shit shoveler, it's just that records are easier to track down for the former (and it's cooler, obvi).

Most people *can't* track it down regardless though, at least not with official records. Considering public records only go back a couple centuries, this is hardly surprising. The chance of having records going back the 700 years to the Bruce is slim. More likely it's family folklore dating back just a few generations. That said, he had 11 children and lived 7 centuries ago; there's a decent chance they have some link, along with everyone else of Scottish descent.
