Im Swedish. I was born and raised in Sweden. In my whole life I NEVER ONCE met a Swedish person who claimed to be related to any famous viking, even though I statistically must know someone. No one ever says things like that, ”I’m related to Ragnar Lodbrok”. Please explain to me how every single American who has Scandinavian ancestry is somehow related to both Harald Bluetooth, Bjorn Ironside, Harald Hardrada or 3 other famous Norse kings? Explain?

Much the same in Scotland, every one of them is descended from William Wallace or Robert the Bruce , but not one from big shug the shit shoveler, which statistically seems very improbable

I’ve always thought it was funny too. I’m American with Scandinavian ancestry, and like, 99% chance my ancestors were just farmers lol everyone wants to have cool ancestors, but really they are all just farmers

That far back, it *is* plausible that they'd be descended from various royalty. (By comparison, most Europeans are descended from Charlemagne and most Brits come from Edward III, etc.) The issue is treating this as something significant when it isn't. Oh, you're descended from William the Conqueror? Me too, what of it? And so on.

Did it ever occur to you that different cultures interests might not be the same as yours? Where we came from is meaningful to us.I’m American and I find it fun to trace my ancestry. I’m not related to anyone remotely famous. Some of my ancestors could have been born on the wrong side of the blanket, but it isn’t that important. My mother’s family all come from Germany, but I only claim heritage. I don’t consider myself German. BTW - my last name is from the Swiss side that emigrated to the US.
