i always wondered, why are the minesota timber wolves and the indiana pacers the only basketball teams named after their states instead of cities 🤔

Trying to make a wider geographic area feel included. Minnesota does it with all their sports.

When I took a tour of Target Field where the Twins play I was told all of the Minnesota teams use Minnesota because they only have one team for each sport

Have you heard of the Lakers? They used to be Minnesota. Just like Dallas Stars were the North Stars.

For Minnesota teams, the naming actually originates from the Minneapolis Lakers leaving MN. They had poor attendence and the perception was they alienated fans from St. Paul, elsewhere. So when the Washington Senators came to Minnesota and were the only pro team in 1961, the owner made sure to be inclusive to gain more fans. The Vikings followed suit later that year and every team since.
