My son has a lot of meltdowns where he becomes aggressive and unless I can get him calm enough for some breathing exercises we kind of just let him throw himself around. As long as he’s safe and can’t cause injury to himself or anyone around him ABA says it’s okay to do. But, it is usually due to overstimulation. Could be the lights, the noise, they might need like a squeeze.

You do not ever discipline an autistic child for having a meltdown. They cannot help it. They need to be kept safe, and you ride it out, and then you try to figure out the trigger and adapt life/environment so that they feel safe and regulated, which will reduce meltdowns.

Meltdowns sadly can’t be controlled. I’m literally 30 and still have them. What you can do is figure out why they started find out if anything can be fixed. Sometimes you just have to let it happen and calm down then figure out what’s wrong afterwards. My dad has helped me most of the time through these. Most of the time I have to let it out then he will help me breath and figure it out. Now if it’s not a meltdown but is a tantrum …. Then idk do what parents do for those?
