I never endorse violence for achieving positive change. But there's an undeniable sense of martyrdom in the undying spirit of radical abolitionist John Brown.
If everyone really thought he was just a crazed radical who only caused problems, then how do you explain the entire Black regiment singing John Brown’s Body after liberating Charleston - while weeping uncontrollably with joy at the impending end of slavery in America? Resistance needs a symbol. Maybe not a martyr. But at least a hero.
