Have you noticed how a sub 4 marathon nowadays seem like nothing new? Looks like you don’t need to be a long time runner as even the new ones have been achieving it. Must be their passion and discipline that’s giving them the edge.

Or maybe running a 9 minute a mile pace isn’t a great athletic achievement. When I ran a 3:44 in 1983 it was considered quite pedestrian. I then gave up running and all sports for 40 years, trained for 6 months, and ran a 3:56 in 2024. Now it’s considered impressive. A sub-4 is no harder, actually easier, today. There are just thousands of people running slower times that were unheard of a generation ago and a sub-4 is only impressive by comparison.

I've done it during IRONMAN races. Sub 4 isn't too hard, and doing it without the 3.8km swim and 180km on the bike first is much easier.
