Because Suge Knight had an album titled “Chronic 2000” which came out in either 98 or 99 so Dre couldn’t use that title anymore & so Dre ended up one upping that & released the Legendary “Chronic 2001” back in 99.

Back before the year 2000, calling something “2000” sounded futuristic, there was a trend of products being named “<product name> 2000” the same way they sometimes now are called “<product name> 3000”. 2001 was also the name of a popular science fiction movie and novel, adding to its appeal. Using 2001 sounded like science fiction because the idea of the third millennium still seemed futuristic even back then, only a year away from it.
