18 yo: You’re not going to go to the store then? Me: You mean the shop. They use the word store in America, but in this country, the UK, we like to use the word ‘shop’ 18 yo: Deep sigh.

True. That said growing up in South Wales in 60s and 70s we said "I'm going to the stores" meaning the local Coop.

I prefer apartment over flat, and leiutenant over lefttenant (coz I’m a writer lol) BUT that is the extent to which I will use American versions of words! It’s a pavement, boot and rubbish bin ☺️

Quick rant - why on University Challenge do they frame the question 'who was X building named for?' instead of "named after"?

I’ve literally heard English people pronounce closet like “clawzit” because they’d only ever heard Americans say it because we don’t say closet at all here. So when I said you mean “clozzit” they’d say “what’s that” 🙃

I'm an English teacher, and here are some common Americanisms I see my students using: apartment, store, anyways, shopping cart, I could care less, math, zee (instead of zed), gotten, bangs, takeout... the list goes on! (If I see one more American spelling I may be forced to defenestrate myself...)
