How? Did you know people used to sit with dead bodies for several days to have closure? Sometimes people are in shock still even during the funeral. Being able to visually revisit it and see a story told 3rd person helps them heal. I made a drone video for a classmate, veteran, and DAMN good man who passed during Covid. It was good for all of us.

I photographed a funeral last year and the daughter emailed me weeks later and said her mom was profoundly thankful because she was so deep in her grief that everything was a blur and it really helped her to see faces she missed and the reminders of how much he was loved.

To each their own. It’s part of a family’s story. I regret not bringing my camera to my grandmother’s funeral. There were a lot of beautiful moments between siblings and family members I think would have been great to pass on through our family.

I have shot quite a few, from firefighters to soldiers to just straight up great humans.

I covered a funeral once.. I’ve never felt so out of place and uncomfortable before Like.. do I take this photo of his mum crying? I dunno.. it’s so uncomfortable

Us Orthodox Christians stay up all night with the deceased reading the Psalms over them by candlelight before the funeral. I haven’t photographed such an event yet but I’d love to, it’s so raw, intimate and transcendent.

I’ve photographed and videotaped funerals for a couple people before especially when they were big in the community or knew they were going to have a lot of family from out of town who hadn’t been together in years and they wanted the memories. So it’s really not that crazy but i understand why one would feel that way lol
