In 1961, Soviet surgeon Leonid Rogozov was stranded at an Antarctic research station when he developed appendicitis. With no way to evacuate, he performed surgery on himself using a mirror and local anesthesia. Pausing from weakness, he removed his appendix in two hours. Despite the harsh conditions, he recovered and resumed work in two weeks.
