In 1936, August Landmesser stood at a Nazi rally in Hamburg but refused to salute, captured in a now-famous photograph. He had fallen in love with Irma Eckler, a Jewish woman, leading to his expulsion from the Nazi Party. Arrested in 1938, he was sent to a labor camp, while Irma perished in a concentration camp. Drafted into a penal battalion, he went missing in action in 1944. His quiet act of defiance remained unknown for decades until the photo resurfaced.
