I used a water bottle with a good squirt stream. Trainers hate that, but it worked . 1 squirt to his butt, got his attention, then called his name and gave treat ( for coming) he used to sit by the door and then try to escape ( almost took out a screen door) if he got within 6 ft of door, squirt! After a couple weeks, I just needed to give treat. Became the best companion for the next 10 years.
