I adopted my cat, who had either been lost or abandoned for some time before he came to me, from my apartment complex. It took him probably a week or so. My vet recommended I break his feeding into three times and have the last one be as late as possible, then play with him. That seemed to do the trick. (A few months later, we moved to a new apartment and he never asked to go outside again.)
