I don't think society is necessarily pushing being alone = being lonely. Alternatively, I think society has responded to current trends such as high school shooters (many of whom are lonely) multiple statistics on loneliness amongst men, young people not going out as much as the previous generation thus increasing the chances of loneliness. I think there is an irrational fear that those who enjoy time alone may become lonely.
