According to FIVB casebook 2024 edition 3.27.4, it was a correct decision. It wouldn’t be a fault, if the ball hits the player through the net in a situation, where the player standing close to the net is in a passive/neutral position without any movement towards the ball OR protect his/her face/body against a strongly spiked ball. But if the player moves towards the ball, „chasing” it and deliberately hits it and changing the direction and/or the speed of the rebounding ball, it is not allowed.
