We’re pleased to announce that, after taking onboard regulatory feedback, we will begin training our AI at Meta models using public content shared by adults on Facebook and Instagram in the UK and Brazil.

This is good news for innovation in both countries - it means we can bring our AI at Meta products to both the UK and Brazil much sooner, and that our generative AI models will understand local culture, history and idiom. You can read more about here: https://about.fb.com/news/2024/09/building-ai-technology-for-the-uk-in-a-responsible-and-transparent-way/

I wouldn’t be so “pleased” to announce this. Consider for a moment that the content posted on Meta platforms is still subject to copyright, which Meta does not own, nor can it own or have a license to use it by merely saying it does. Here’s an example: someone posts a screencap of Beetlejuice in excitement for the new film. They don’t own the copyright and therefore are not authorized to transfer any sort of license to use it to Meta. Public ≠ free to use.
