When I was a young, struggling single mom I was working as an assistant to the president of a bank. He was a jovial, nice enough guy... with two houses and a bunch of property he leased, the beneficiary of generational wealth. My car was breaking down, and one day as I we were chatting about it, his answer: "Just go buy a new car!" I explained I didn't have it in my budget for a new monthly payment, and he said "well, pay cash!" 1/3

When I indicated my savings account was very limited, his solution was for me to get my dad (who was not in my life at the time, and had no money) to help me. He was completely detached from the realities of my life, financially at least, as he had never experienced not having a trust fund or a relative to bail him out when he needed it. This bank president could not believe that I couldn't just go buy a new car. 2/3

Being out-of-touch like that is a choice for an adult. Not knowing that people may not be able to afford something is just being deliberately obtuse. Maybe it’s excusable to miss out on some subtleties (e.g. not knowing about the anxiety of your kid getting a free benefit that they might not be eligible for or not actually be free and having to pay it back, etc.) if you’ve never experienced it, but you’re telling me there’s bankers walking around not knowing how 99% of the world lives?

10 years ago my ex and I had a friend if mine bring a Millionaire come to our house to pitch his business to me and her, it was a pyramid scheme. When he was talking to us about our finances, he asked what our rent was, and we told him $800 a month. My friend was like "dang!" And the Millionaire was like "oh, is that a lot?" We told him it was, and he then went on to brag about his 20 car garage, his in home theater and basketball court. The detachment from reality is insane in the rich.

My ex was like, "people should adjust their spending to save 30% for savings" and I was like, "how does someone who make minimum wage and has a family to house and feed do that??" He literally does not understand because he has always had money.

Reminds me of a wealthy friend we had, who was always inviting us on these really expensive dive vacations with him. When We told him, sorry dude we can’t afford to go, he offered us the most infuriating “financial advice”. He told us to just pack our lunches and save 😹 or course we had been packing our lunches for our entire adult life at that point….
