Quick question: Is owning a home really that bad? Everyone makes it sound like a money-draining nightmare, but some people are also die-hard about the idea that home ownership is better than renting.

Like anything it really depends on a long list. Do you need a lot of space or is an apartment okay? Are you buying into an hoa? Can you do your own handiwork? Buying an older house in a "healthy" real estate market is too much for my risk appetite right now, especially when snow removal and a pool are some of my amenities

I’ve used leasing vs buying a car… pros and cons are similar with more money and longer commitments…

it’s a sort of catch 22, if you make less money buying a house makes more sense because you have less wiggle room for saving but also because of that you’re less likely to be able to cope with a new roof or HVAC

Those are typically the same people that go into debt for a new vehicle to avoid maintenance costs that come with an older paid off vehicle. For example my disposal went out. Plumber quoted me $350. $60 and one YouTube video later I was fine. Being retired and not having to worry about anything besides taxes, insurance, and occasional repairs is huge.

Bought 5 years ago. Mortgage rate is low. Put a decent down payment down. House is valued at almost $200,000 more than I bought it for. That means that I have equity in this property already. No amount of repairs will negate the feeling of ownership - that my payment is lower than rent was/is, or that I’m no longer paying someone for the pleasure of temporarily using their house…

Do you want to keep working to have to pay rent after retirement? If people are able to buy then they should.

I think it’s all relative to age and lifestyle. Owning is so hard to do when you’re young. It’s hard to save enough for a downpayment, especially when you’re renting. If you can manage it, it’s good for building a nest egg for yourself or loved ones. But once you get older, I think renting becomes easier again. You don’t have to worry about maintenance of keeping a home. Also apartments can offer one level living and a community for older folks a lot of times.

Please note, you’re already paying a mortgage. It’s just not yours. And you’re also not able to capitalize on the equity gains when you decide to sell. With that being said, it depends on your lifestyle. Are you wanting to move around and start anew every year like someone mentioned above, or are you gladly staying in the same area for at least 2 years and want stability? That’s the importance of working with professionals so you can be sure the home you’re buying is a sound investment for YOU.

we bought a “landlord special” in 2019 and have been chasing issues ever since. our utility company found that the previous owner had spliced and duct taped a frayed extension cord onto the main line… like, WHAT?? if you don’t have 20-30k to sink into repairs and upgrades, you might have a strained relationship with homeownership like we do 🥲
