Renting in the UK is in a dire state right now. I’ve rented all my life (I’m 36) and after 5 years in one property I’m now looking again. I’ve been looking for 6 months+ and I keep being rejected to rent. I’m now homeless with a 9yo daughter because no one wants to rent to me. Landlords are being allowed to cherry pick tenants and it’s infuriating. They’re not even asking for references (which would work in my favour). They just see single mum on benefits and refuse me. I’m at my wits end 😩

Why shouldn’t they be allowed to ‘cherrypick’ tenants? If you had a property wouldn’t you want to rent to the most financially stable person?

It is terrible market for renters which is one reason why l wrote a book “A renters guide to getting your deposit back” l know from family members with their experiences how bad it is. I really feel fro anyone renting. It’s a crisis!

Go to your local council they are under obligation to house you into emergency housing if youre homeless with a young daughter. Also you need to get onto social housing waiting list. Again they should give you a priority because of your child. Good luck to you.

Six years ago I rented to a single woman with a 9yr old girl. I gave her a chance even though I had 5 other ‘safer’ options because I hoped she would make it a long time home for her child. Well, that was a disaster! She stopped paying her rent after 6 months and I had to take legal action to get evict her from the property which she had also trashed. It cost me a lot of money and stress so if I was still a landlord I would always choose the person in the best financial position

It's shocking the amount of power and control landlords can have, especially when the prospects of buying, for so many, are so bleak. Me and my partner were looking for 6+ months before we moved and had plenty of landlords simply 'prefer someone else' . Our options were already super limited cos we have pets.

I rent directly to the council because landlords are greedy bastards

It’s all about risk mitigation. If you’re a single person, you don’t have anybody else to rely on if you lose your job. You’re a Mum so you’re going to feed your baby before you pay your rent. I can’t afford as a landlord to subsidise you or to manage your cash flow. And the laws changing I can’t ask you to leave either.

Government now charging landlords 8% NI increase… so that’ll no doubt filter down too 🙈
