Do you expect an advance for your poetry collection? Please note this poll is about POETRY COLLECTIONS only. I personally would not expect an advance for a poetry collection, but it has come to my attention that some poets would not accept a contract without an advance (?!). Keep in mind that book publishers often do not make a profit on poetry collections.

They used to do this in the Netherlands, 20 years ago, you'd get 500 euro. I dont think there's any publisher left doing that, but good luck.

I've only ever gotten paid money for one piece. Otherwise, the lit mags that have accepted my work for publication have either compensated me with two copies of the publication, and only for those which make physical copies. I do wish there were better options to be financially, tangibly compensated, but our capitalist system does not value the value of our works, our capial.

I did see one publisher that offers a $200 advance for poetry collections. I can’t remember which one it was. I briefly considered having my press offer a small advance but I thought it’d make more sense to increase the royalty percentage so it’s fair for everyone involved.

Back in 2004 I had an opportunity for a big *unnamed* publication who wanted to publish my poetry book and I was going to get a $10,000 advance. But I had severe PPD and couldn't meet the deadlines and had to pay it back and lost the deal. Never had another opportunity for that. In this day and age I think it depends on the publisher. Lack of interest in poetry based on the lack of marketing doesn't change how much work a poet puts into the book. But...this is why I only self publish.
