Butternut is a squash, but JAP and Queensland blue and all that are pumpkins

Cultural differences, oh no!!

North American pumpkins are typically bred for decorative purposes (ie carving for jack-o-lanterns) but the pumpkins we would eat in NZ (and Oz) are more akin to a Hubbard squash. Pumpkins in either place are just a type of winter squash anyway – there are dozens of types w/only minimal differences in texture and flavour. So yeah, Australian pumpkins can be pretty readily swapped out with a Butternut or Buttercup squash, typical North American varieties. But they aren’t decorative gourds, lol.

I'm in Texas. We eat more than just actual pumpkin. Like, loads of different squash and gourds. It just grows so well here. There's a lot of it around. 😅

Summer squash has a thinner skin and is soft. Winter squash, like butternut and acorn, are hard skinned. And then there's pumpkins (eating pumpkins, carving pumpkins, decoration pumpkins, giant pumpkins).

We grow pumpkins for sale (Nebraska US) including what we call "heirloom" pumpkins. One of our most popular is the Jarrahdale which we promote as being from Australia. Most people like to decorate with them but others do buy them to cook.

Nope, pumpkins are pumpkins in the UK. Squash is cordial drink.
