Hot Take: Brands are allowed to ask for content in exchange for products. Guess what? You can just say no. It’s not a personal attack. Not all brands have a marketing budget, many of them (including myself) are starting out. Creators don’t typically drive enough web traffic for the sales funnel with a single post, especially if margins are slim and the products need volume. It doesn’t hurt Brands to ask, especially if they find people that are excited to simply try the product.

What really just surprises me anymore is how many people will accept an invite or a free product — willingly, in advance — and then get mad when they have to post. Like, don’t say yes if you aren’t going to give something in return. It’s business.

Well said my man!! I think the best approach is always set boundaries in your response vs shoot it down or get “offended”. Some of my favorite and best partnerships have come from starting off with a gifting campaign! One of my largest deals this year came from one of these and if I shot that intro email request down, I wouldn’t have made the money that followed!

I agree. I love content creation, specifically photos, and having a new product to play with for a photo is a way I push my creativity. When a brand reaches out, they are getting some exposure sure, but mostly a creative use of their products and/or photos, and sometimes video. If they are specific in what they want and I know my cost to create it will be high or not my preferred recipe, the. I'll ask for enough to cover hard goods. My caveat is this is not my career. This is a creative release.

Creator’s job is brand awareness and not to guarantee sales. Also, many big brands/businesses do have the budget but are cheap & looking for free advertising.

I agree, IMO a lot of creators are jaded in their view of the value they provide when most don’t actually convert into any sales when they promote. If you can’t convert your audience into action, why am I paying you? Som people say about brand awareness but one creator at 7k ain’t providing much brand awareness, that’s more for big brands that can pay 200 creators to post at the same time
