In the early days after Oct 7, many people who I knew were feeling the loss of Israeli lives at the hands of Hamas very deeply were able to say, at the same time as they condemned Hamas, that Netanyahu had and would continue to make things worse—they were able to denounce his and Likud’s policies towards Palestine. As the assault on Gaza continues, I hear less of that—more defense of Israel as a state that INCLUDES a defense of Netanyahu’s aggression. That turn is scary.

幾秒內	Aruna D'Souza invisible.flaneuse	It’s the same turn that we saw under Trump, when people who were otherwise pretty liberal dug in their heels about an issue (most often racial justice) and began embracing Trump—“look, you and your BLM bullshit drove me to Trump.” I saw this a lot in the Massachusetts town I lived in.

Over here in Israel, it is quite the opposite: criticism of Netanyahu is only growing, not due to his aggression in Gaza, but because even amid this terrible time he is still acting in his own political interests in a very Trump-like manner: dodging responsibility, casting blame every which way, lying and inciting hatred. Forget the suffering in Gaza: Netanyahu is seen as the cause of suffering in Israel, where he is (supposed to be) in charge.
