If the top 5 high schools in Illinois are “in the city” (Chicago), why do certain people run to the suburbs for “better schools”?

Adlai Stevenson high school is the number one public school in the state…the ones listed are magnet schools…we just had to live in the district to attend..I’ll take that any day over a lottery system….and yes my property taxes are high but he got a great education

You to apply to all these schools. They aren’t Chicago public schools.

1. The ability to get your kid in those schools or the selective enrollment schools in the city. 2. The mitigating factors your kid deals with during those years. Influence of the other kids & the environment, impact of the parent community, resources for supporting kids in the transition to [young] adulthood.

All Chicago neighborhood schools should be as good and well funded as selective enrollment schools. I’ve taught in both the suburbs and Chicago and our 8th grade kids in Chicago should not have to be so stressed over taking a test just so they *might* get accepted into one of these schools. We don’t make suburban students go through this. They just go to their neighborhood school where they will have excellent sports and music programs. Make all public neighborhood schools great schools for kids

These are selective enrollment schools. If your child does not pass the test and have good grades they won’t be selected. Most schools in the suburbs don’t require a test and are just as good.

The admissions rates in these schools are lower than the Ivy League. Parents done want to get into a situation where their smart kids don’t get in and have to move to the suburbs after 8th grade
