… aaannnndddd this is the moment we decided YouTube is no longer a good idea for our 10 year old daughter. It’s a shopping list of beauty products she wants to buy from Saphora, no doubt recommended by an influencer. parentingthreads

Honestly the cleanser+exfoliator+(spf)moisturizer combo is enough for literally anybody serious about skin care....but for a 10 year old, she dont even need to exfoliate lmfao This the kinda product lists for 30 and over years tryna stay youthful

as a 12 year old i used cleansers and toners and they helped boost my self confidence without actually making me look any different. a lot of the things she asked for are acne treatments- maybe starting a conversation about skincare and how to go about it in a healthy non consumptive way. when i was 12 i felt as though my acne was horrible and all i wanted was to go on accutane- which is so much stronger than all of those toners and cleansers

Cleaner, lotion, sunscreen. That’s all a 10 year old needs 😭🤯

I would remind her that influencers get paid to promote products that aren’t necessarily good for our skin/ don’t work. However, skin is our largest organ and everyone should be using an spf. She has a plan for self care every morning and night, that’s something even some grown women don’t prioritize. Obviously 10 year old skin doesn’t need all that, but washing your face is a great idea for anyone, start with spf and cleanser!

While this is an obviously problematic behavior coming from a 10yo, I think it's way more important to talk to them about their motivation rather than punishment or restrictions. YouTube is a HUGE tool in the right hands, there's music, science, design, essays, short films, sketches... You can learn basically anything there

There’s definitely a conversation that can be had, while taking care of your skin IS important. At that age all you really need to do is wash your face, maybe use a moisturizer and wear sunscreen! Teach her the importance of wearing sunscreen and protecting her skin from the sun. When she’s older she’ll be well equipped to make informed purchases (not dictated by youtube and tiktok lol)

I honestly just think it is sad that a 10 year old is thinking this much about how their skin looks 😕 And while I know times obviously change, at this age my xmas wish lists were for the new pokemon game and scented gel pens. The beauty obsession is starting younger and younger and it can't be psychologically healthy.

My 9 year old was having a similar issue a few months ago. Luckily one of my friends is an aesthetician who she very much idolises - she had a great conversation with her about how much damage these products can do to her skin if she uses them before she needs them. Your daughter seems smart, there's probably a youtube video explaining a similar thing!
