I was taught that it was correct and I heard Black people using the term themselves so I was saying “African American” until fairly recently.

I am being totally honest. There is a word I would never, never use. What word is appropriate? I would never want to be in the wrong.

for me it depends. people i know call me black because i correct/explain my preference to them. if they proceed to call me aa i take it as disrespect.
