I see NEW SCHOOL vs OLD SCHOOL stylist. Old school are more flexible,Too flexible,Too accommodating, over worked But don’t play about customer service. New school stylist NON LICENSED has soooooo many policies they can’t even keep up with. They’re not really flexible, not as accommodating. Very much my times are my times. Where’s the balance? I’m talking IN GENERAL. I’ve been in the industry since double booking was normal, clothes & food came to our door. We didn’t have to go out the salon for

It's clear that the industry has evolved, with varying approaches to flexibility, customer service, and business practices.

While "old school" stylists might be perceived as more flexible and accommodating, their overwork and lack of boundaries can be detrimental to their well-being. On the other hand, "new school" stylists with strict policies may struggle to adapt to client needs and build lasting relationships. Licensing is public information so that should never be factored in if you’ve chosen not to do the research.

Finding the right balance involves striking a harmonious blend of professionalism, flexibility, and self-care. It's essential to establish clear boundaries, prioritize client satisfaction, and continuously adapt to industry trends and client preferences.

I agree with this post. I have witnessed an experienced hairstylist being underpaid, staying in the salon until 3:00am still charging $45 for a wash and press, having to get a second job just to make ends meet. She worked tirelessly with outdated ‘old-school’ pricing, dealing with clients who were late, disrespected her work hours and thinking she didnt have a life outside of work. She struggled to set boundaries for herself and her family.

I’ve been doing hair for 20 years. There is a healthy balance. I hope boundaries with clients while still providing great customer services. I was taught by the stylists of the 1960’s-1990’s. They didn’t play when it came to taking advantage. They told me never bring your scissors home, always charge full price etc. It was good advice. The only thing I dislike about the new school is the lack of customer service. By that I mean sometimes they don’t even introduce themselves to the client.
