Here’s a random and more serious question for you guys that I would never, ever, EVER ask on IG — how do I tell my super religious parents that I no longer really practice religion? For reference, I’ve always been very close with my parents but in more recent years I’ve felt like the conversation has been driving a little bit of a wedge between us. I no longer connect with the teachings of the church for myself but absolutely do not judge anyone who decides to practice any sort of religion. 1/2

You’ve already noticed the emotionality of the “wedge” and it will get larger and stronger in time due to poor communication. You owe it to yourself and to them to be strait, come-what-may. Everyone is an adult and can sort their emotions out after the truth is spoken.

It felt good to say it out loud even though I had not hidden anything or gone to church in their absence for almost 20 years. My Dad took it well, I’m not sure but he may have been both happy I could talk to him about it and sad as you would expect. We haven’t talked about it since but he sent me a book about science and religion. Intellectualizing the topic as my family does.
